RELEASE DATE

October 10, 2025

The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans issued the following statement as the Trump Administration has indicated they are proceeding with mass layoffs in the wake of the government shutdown:

President Trump’s decision to exploit the government shutdown and conduct mass firings of the federal workforce should be a wake up call for our communities. These decisions are intentional and they are ultimately his choice.

NCAPA’s work has always been to advocate for our communities at the federal level and we have historically engaged with leaders regardless of political affiliation. We have never witnessed an American President so willing to inflict harm across the board on the people they were sworn to serve. The 1.5 million AANHPIs receiving healthcare subsidies, the over 4 million on Medicaid, and the over 233,000 AANHPI public servants who help support communities across this country deserve better than to be made political collateral damage.

###

Based in Washington, D.C., the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans is a coalition of 44 national Asian Pacific American organizations. We represent the interests of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) communities and provide a national voice for our communities’ concerns.
