NCAPA Statement on Senate Bill to Reopen Government

The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans issued the following statement as the Senate prepares to pass a bill to reopen the government through January 30th, while fully funding the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Veterans Affairs, military construction projects, and the legislative branch for the year. If passed by the House of Representatives and signed into law, this bill would end the longest government shutdown in history:

“We hope every community member will remember that this is a Congress that stopped at nothing to pass permanent tax cuts for the rich, while allowing a record-setting government shutdown because they couldn’t agree on whether to feed American families and make healthcare more affordable.

“While struggling Americans absolutely deserve relief, including nearly 2 million Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians who rely on food stamps, this deal does not help the millions of Americans whose healthcare will get more expensive.

“We all deserve leaders who will fight just as hard for their most vulnerable constituents as they do for their richest donors.“
