NCAPA Demands Accountability for ICE As Federal Funding Set to Surpass $85 Billion

NCAPA issued the following in response to the ongoing violence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) across the country. The agency is set to receive an additional $10 billion in taxpayer dollars after receiving a historic $75 billion under President Trump’s tax cut bill. The U.S. House of Representatives passed funding for ICE last week and the bill is currently being considered by the Senate.

Congress must do its job and hold to account this agency and leadership that continues to disregard the law, act with impunity, and harm the very people it purports to protect.

We are outraged as the safety and security of our communities remain at risk as the Trump Administration continues its attacks on communities nationwide. The most recent murders of American citizens in Minnesota at the hands of ICE highlights that something must change.

We are equally concerned that as ICE has become the highest-funded law enforcement entity in the U.S., Congress must do more to reign in the agency before it appropriates an additional $10 billion.

Across the country, people have faced violence and death because of ICE. As we continue to witness the onslaught of attacks and unlawful force against the elderly, children, and families across the country,

NCAPA National Director Gregg Orton added:

“For the last year, we have watched as our communities have been terrorized by the Trump Administration and ICE. The staggering number of examples of excessive force, violence and disregard for the law leaves little question that this agency, under the instruction of President Trump, is operating far beyond its mandate and scope.

“While we are being told by the White House that their focus is only on criminals and violent offenders, firsthand accounts clearly demonstrate this is a blatant lie. This Administration, who swore to protect Americans and the Constitution, are willing and wanting to violently target its own citizens.

“Perhaps equally damning are the Members of Congress who are enabling this violence against Americans. Rather than act as a check and balance, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to give ICE $10 billion more dollars to act as a private police force for the President. They have the ability to exercise oversight, demand accountability and institute reforms, instead many of them continue to show more loyalty to the President than to the oath they took to the American people.

“America is definitively less safe and more divided under their leadership, and that will be their lasting legacy in history.”
