NCAPA Commemorates Juneteenth 2026
Washington, D.C. – The National Council of Asian Pacific Americans issued the following statement honoring and celebrating the legacy of Juneteenth, or Freedom Day, as a symbolic milestone marking the end of slavery in America. This holiday commemorates the promise of a better America, and celebrates the foundational belief that all of us are created equal.
This Juneteenth, we reflect on how our own fight for civil rights as Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders is a shared struggle with the Black community. This country has taken its greatest leaps forward when we embrace solidarity, rather than playing into a power hierarchy that thrives on cross-racial division.
As anti-immigrant racism continues to terrorize our community, and as our legal system continues to fail Black Americans, anti-Blackness also exists in our community. Embracing anti-Blackness serves only to stoke anti-AAPI hate; and it is all of our responsibility to continue to educate and push back against these harmful perceptions.
So long as we continue to fight one another and be divided, White supremacy and racism will continue to flourish. We encourage our communities and partners to take today and every day to uplift Black voices, stand in solidarity with Black people, and build community together.
