Advocating for AAPI Renters in the Current Housing Crisis
May 26, 2020 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm EDT
Host: Asian Americans Advancing Justice – AAJC
With rising unemployment in this country due to the economic impact of COVID 19, the burden on renters, who have already been struggling to make ends meet, has increased. While May 1st data is not yet available, over one- third of renters couldn’t afford to pay rent on April 1st. Representatives from our member organizations will discuss how AAPI communities are being impacted by the current crisis, and strategies including case management, community organizing, and advocacy to prevent evictions locally. We will also have national legal and policy experts discuss the federal protections included in the CARES ACT, as well as local and federal policy solutions.
Special Invitation to: Direct service providers, community organizers, housing advocates, anyone who knows someone struggling to pay rent!
Michelle Nelson, Housing Services Supervisor, Interim CDA
Sasha Wijeyeratne, Executive Director, CAAAV: Organizing Asian Communities
Shamus Roller, Executive Director, National Housing Law Project
