National Council of Asian Pacific Americans Welcomes the Supreme Court Ruling that Blocks the Citizenship Question on the 2020 Census

Washington, DC— After the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to reject the Department of Commerce’s rationale for adding the citizenship question on the 2020 Census, and to send the case back to a lower court, National Council of Asian Pacific Americans issued the following statement:

NCAPA is glad that today, the Supreme Court has made the right decision to effectively stop the addition of the citizenship question, which was an attempt to intimidate our communities to not be counted in the 2020 Census. Although temporary, this is a win for our democracy, for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities, and for millions of others who are at risk of being undercounted.

The Census determines the distribution of billions of federal dollars, especially to our communities and other communities of color, who have historically been denied the necessary community resources and the political representation in the redistricting process. Our own democracy depends on the Census to be done right, and this ruling is the right step towards a fair and accurate Census.

The work for the 2020 Census is not over, and we will continue our work for a fair and accurate count of our communities.
